What is a vanity number?
A vanity number is a phone number that spells a word, a name or an acronym. The FCC gives 1-800-FLOWERS and 1-888-NEW-CARS as examples. They are easier to remember than random digits, which is why businesses like them for ads.
Why do some vanity numbers have too many letters?
A North American number has ten digits after the 1. If the word is longer, the extra letters are simply ignored by the phone network. 1-800-FLOWERS has exactly seven letters, so every letter counts.
How to get a vanity number
Toll-free vanity numbers are sold by phone companies and virtual number providers. Search for the word you want across all seven toll-free prefixes: 800, 888, 877, 866, 855, 844 and 833.
