How to call the United States from another country

  • Dial your country’s exit code. In most countries it is 00. In Australia it is 0011 and in Japan it is 010.
  • Dial 1, the country code for the US and Canada.
  • Dial the three-digit area code and the seven-digit number.

On a mobile phone you can skip the exit code. Press and hold 0 to type a plus sign, then enter 1 and the ten-digit number.

Can I call a US toll-free number from abroad?

Often not. Numbers that start with 800, 833, 844, 855, 866, 877 or 888 may not connect from outside the US and Canada, and when they do the call may not be free. Look for a regular local number on the company’s website instead.
