Where Is the 332 Area Code Located?

Area code 332 covers the borough of Manhattan, from the Financial District and Midtown up to Harlem, Washington Heights and Inwood.

There is one small exception. Marble Hill is legally part of Manhattan but is served by the Bronx telephone network, so it uses 718, 347 and 929 instead.

The other four boroughs have their own codes. Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island use 718, 347, 929 and 465. See our 929 area code guide and 347 area code guide.

What Time Zone Is the 332 Area Code In?

Manhattan is on Eastern Time.

  • Eastern Standard Time (EST), UTC-5, in winter
  • Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), UTC-4, from mid March to early November

Standard office hours in Manhattan are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern. That is 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. in California.

History of the 332 Area Code

Manhattan numbers have always been in short supply.

  • 1947: 212 is assigned to all five boroughs of New York City.
  • September 1, 1984: Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island move to 718.
  • 1992: The Bronx moves to 718, leaving 212 for Manhattan only. In the same year 917 is introduced across the whole city.
  • July 1, 1999: 646 is added as an overlay for Manhattan.
  • June 10, 2017: 332 becomes active as the next Manhattan overlay.

The code was assigned in November 2015, when it became clear that 212 and 646 numbers were close to running out. New Manhattan lines began to receive 332 numbers in 2017.

Why Does 332 Look Unfamiliar?

Because it is young. People have known 212 for generations, and 646 has been around since 1999. A 332 number has the same standing as either of them. It is simply what a new Manhattan customer is most likely to get today, since 212 numbers are almost never available from carriers.

How to Dial a 332 Number

  • From the US or Canada: 1 + 332 + the seven-digit number
  • From another country: your exit code + 1 + 332 + the seven-digit number

Calls between 212, 646, 332 and 917 numbers in Manhattan are local calls.

Is a Call From 332 a Scam?

Not automatically. A 332 number can belong to a law firm, a doctor’s office, a startup or a neighbor. But the code has two features that scammers like. It is new, so plenty of numbers are free. And it carries the trust of a Manhattan address.

Be cautious if the caller:

  • Says they are from a bank, investment firm or government office and pushes you to act fast
  • Offers a job, loan or apartment and asks for a fee first
  • Sends a text with a link about a delivery, toll or account lock
  • Asks for a one-time code, your card number or remote access to your computer

How to check an unknown 332 number

  • Let it go to voicemail first.
  • Search the full number online.
  • Call the company on the number shown on its official website.
  • Block the number if the call was clearly spam.
  • Report scam calls at reportfraud.ftc.gov and add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry.
  • Forward spam texts to 7726 (SPAM).

How to Get a 332 Phone Number

A Manhattan number is valuable for a business that wants a New York City image.

  • Mobile and landline carriers assign 332 to new Manhattan lines when it is the code with free numbers.
  • VoIP and virtual number providers let you pick a 332 number even if you work from another state or country.
  • Looking for 212? Those numbers are rare and are mostly sold by specialist resellers. A 332 or 646 number covers the same area at normal prices.

Our guide to virtual phone numbers explains how forwarding works. For the older Manhattan overlay, read the 646 area code guide.
