The whole 305 area is on Eastern Time.

  • Eastern Standard Time (EST), UTC-5, in winter
  • Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), UTC-4, from mid March to early November

History of the 305 Area Code

In 1947, 305 was the only area code in Florida. Every phone in the state used it. As the population grew, the state was divided step by step:

  • 1953: 813 takes the west side of the peninsula, from Tampa Bay south.
  • 1965: 904 is created for North Florida.
  • April 16, 1988: 407 takes the Orlando area and the east coast from Palm Beach County north.
  • September 11, 1995: 954 is split off for Broward County.

After 1995, 305 covered only Miami-Dade County and the Keys. It still ran short of numbers because of cell phones and pagers, so overlays followed:

  • March 1, 1998: 786 is added as an overlay for Miami-Dade County.
  • September 1, 2001: 786 is extended to the Florida Keys.
  • August 4, 2023: 645 is added as a third code for the same area.

Why 305 Means Miami

Few area codes are as closely tied to a city as 305. Locals use “the 305” as a nickname for Miami, and the number shows up on clothing, in business names and in music. Because of that, a 305 number is seen as a sign of being established in the city. New 305 numbers are hard to get, and most new lines receive 786 or 645 instead.

Functionally there is no difference between the three. They cover the same streets and calls between them are local. Our 786 area code guide covers the overlay in more detail.

How to Dial a 305 Number

  • From the US or Canada: 1 + 305 + the seven-digit number
  • From another country: your exit code + 1 + 305 + the seven-digit number

Ten-digit dialing is required inside the area because three codes overlap.

Is a Call From 305 a Scam?

A 305 number is usually a real person or business in South Florida. Miami is a hub for travel, real estate, health care and trade with Latin America, so calls from 305 reach people all over the country.

Scammers know this too. Be wary of:

  • Free vacation or cruise offers that need a card number “to hold your spot”
  • Timeshare resale and debt relief pitches
  • Medicare and health insurance robocalls
  • Calls or texts in which someone claims a relative is in trouble and needs money

Caller ID can be spoofed, so a 305 number on your screen does not prove the call comes from Miami.

What to do with an unknown 305 call

  • Let it go to voicemail.
  • Never pay or share personal details on a call you did not start.
  • Hang up and call the company on its official number.
  • Block repeat callers.
  • Report scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov and register at donotcall.gov.
  • Forward spam texts to 7726 (SPAM).

How to Get a 305 Phone Number

  • Carriers: a new Miami line may get 305 if one is free, but 786 and 645 are far more likely.
  • VoIP and virtual number providers: some keep a stock of 305 numbers. You can search by area code and pick one if available.
  • Porting: if you already own a 305 number, you can move it to another provider and keep it.
