History of the 727 Area Code
- 1947: all of Florida is in 305.
- 1953: the Gulf Coast becomes 813.
- 1998: 727 is created by a split of 813, mostly along county lines. The change was completed in early 1999.
The new code was first planned as an overlay on 813. The phone company at the time switched to a split instead. One oddity remains from that decision: most of Oldsmar, although it is in Pinellas County, stayed in 813 because its lines were wired into the Tampa network. See our 813 area code guide.
Beach Towns and Retirees
Pinellas County is the most densely populated county in Florida. It combines busy beach resorts with a large community of retirees. Hotels, charter boats and vacation rentals account for a lot of calls and texts from 727, especially in winter and spring when visitors arrive from the north.

Is a Call From 727 a Scam?

Watch for these warning signs:
- Someone who says they are from the IRS, Social Security or a court and demands payment
- Tech support calls about a virus on your computer
- Investment or crypto offers from a company you do not know
- Texts that ask you to click a link to fix a billing problem
Caller ID can be spoofed, so the number on your screen does not prove where a call comes from.
